- First, players determine their turn order.
- Typically, the raid is last in turn order.
- Second, each player arranges the portions of their deck which are applicable in the following way:
- Their commander or commanders are put into their command zone.
- Their library is put into a face-down pile and shuffled.
- Their sideboard, including companions, is placed to the side of their play area.
- Third, each player sets their starting life total to twenty (20) plus their commander’s toughness, toughness if they were a creature in the case of spacecraft or vehicles, or starting loyalty in the case of a planeswalker.
- If a player has multiple commanders, they may choose which to use for reference when setting their life total in this way.
- Finally, the first player begins their first turn.
- Each player draws a card during their draw step on their first turn.
